This projection is optimized for the equal area display of the North Pacific region, particularly the historic extent of Pacific Salmon distribution (see www.stateofthesalmon.org for more info). Standard Parallels were chosen that span the main latitudinal range of watersheds where salmon are present. It is a based on the ESRI Albers NA WKT (ie. EPSG:102008) but modified to conform to Albers Conic Equal Area OGC WKT. As OGC WKT this custom projection has been tested successfully in QGIS, uDig, and Mapwindow. To use with ESRI software substitute the ESRI WKT for the text in the .prj file when using shapefiles.
